Spank Playlist 2024

Image
The Bigler Bugler is proud to present the first (of many) guest columns. Today, hype man and music columnist Charlie Hurwitz. SPANK PLAYLIST 2024 As many know, Spank is a team with a raunchy personality. One that doesn’t abide by the rules of society and does what it wants. Thanks to recent funding successes, our musical expression has been aided by a large speaker that we lug around to practices, parties and most importantly, tournaments. As Professor Coach Luke’s newest intern, I wanted to share some of the personality of the team with you wonderful alumni. Here is a collection of a few songs in regular rotation at any Spank event. Pimpin’ Pennsylvania- Afroman To start us off hot, Pimpin’ Pennsylvania is not your Grammy’s cookie-baking music. Afroman always does that trick to get us hype whether it is after a flashy score, during sideline banter or on a 506 porch party. Gypsy Woman- Crystal Waters Many past, present and maybe even future Spank players are no stranger to some...

Carolina Kickoff Report

Chapel Hill, NC. Carolina Kickoff Jan 27-28 2024 TL;DR? We came, We saw, and we stole some lunch money.   But we want more. Thursday Night Lights In early days of the Semester, Spank was working hard.  While facilities are hard to come by for club sports, we managed to secure gym time, a little bit of multi sport time, and some time at the indoor soccer center, and thanks to an 'unusually warm' (aka the new normal) winter we  actually played outside! (Thanks again alums who's generous fall gift is helping us pay for the indoor soccer center and football stadium time). Lacking the resources and/or weather of other programs we recognize that every practice counts.  In addition to the full team work, guys have been doing the work, throwing as individuals, playing 'Mini', and hitting the gym.  Thanks for not calling us chumps this year Ultiworld With Carolina Kickoff on the horizon, the guys expressed a mix of confidence in their work, and butterflies about the...

The gang makes their rather demure entrance onto the Ohio Valley Scene.

Steel City Shootout, Nov 4,5 2023 First of all, Fall is Fall. The long-term value of a fall tournament win has as much value, meaning, and importance for the critical Spring Ultimate season as a Fall 2023 political poll does in predicting Fall 2024  Presidential Elections. Still, and all. Finger guns, mo fos. The mood of the room is 'Disco' after a nice outcome at the Steel City Showdown. As you may be aware, weather's been a real burr in the saddle in this year's ride. The team has had some less-than-ideal conditions at tournaments, from the 30+ mph at the Phaal Phling alumni tourney to the Maine Lobster Pot rainout. But we've loved the process and that grind with putting up massive throwing minutes (props to rookie Hayes, who put up 1455 throwing minutes outside of practice in October alone) and solid practice attendance. In addition to our experience with the elements at the tournaments, the team has embraced Sunday scrimmages, which have provided an extra dose o...

Fall Updates; Alumni Weekend aka Phall Phling; Lobster Pot.

Phall Phling Our first tournament of the year was the breezy goodness known as Phall Phling. The tournament was held a little earlier than usual this year but still had a solid 12 team field.  It also featured the largest Alumni team in some years - and certainly the broadest span of years attended, ranging from 'ya boys' from the class of 2023 back to some beauts from the classes of 'early 90's.  Saturday was capped by the Alum team vs the combined Spank X/Y teams, with the Current roster emerging victorious. On Sunday, after bracket play, the alums emerged victorious against the split squads in the semis vs Spank Y, and the finals over Spank X.  The reps were valuable for the team; despite the short sides and increasingly windy conditions (30+ mph at times) the Spank teams went otherwise undefeated against Westchester, Delaware, Lovetap, and Lovetap Alum. Lobster Pot After a couple weeks of 'doing work' the gang loaded up for the long drive to the Lobster Pot ...

Some random footy from drop-add week mini pickup

Image
Just some college guys having fun playing mini.  Shot, chopped by the ol' ball coach, scored by Blur. Ended up w/ 2 games of 7v7 full field pickup with some LoveTap guys and a bunch of new students who are trying out.  Halcyon days, elysian fields, etc.

Spring 2023

The Bigler Bugler Spring 2023 After the rains and wind at regionals. When last we saw the men of happy valley…. We showed up at 8 pm the Monday after spring break, ready to flex, and of course, Club Sports forgot to show up and open the gates.  We did rally the troops and scurried over to West Turf for some ‘pickup’ play. And away we went.  Mostly. There were definitely a couple nights that admin forgot to let us into the fields, etc. But it was nice to be on a full field. Next up we played the Atlantic Coast Open . Saturday was big windy, and sometimes very rainy.  Like, I’m not sure how they were able to continue to use the fields but they were pretty sandy and drained quite well.  We rolled on Saturday against the George Mason, Richmond, Navy and Johns Hopkins. On Sunday we hit a speed bump in the quarters vs. Virginia Tech, digging ourselves a hole to go down 8-4 before mounting a furious comeback that would fall just short 13-12.  VT would go on to lose to...
