Fall Updates; Alumni Weekend aka Phall Phling; Lobster Pot.

Our first tournament of the year was the breezy goodness known as Phall Phling. The tournament was held a little earlier than usual this year but still had a solid 12 team field. It also featured the largest Alumni team in some years - and certainly the broadest span of years attended, ranging from 'ya boys' from the class of 2023 back to some beauts from the classes of 'early 90's. Saturday was capped by the Alum team vs the combined Spank X/Y teams, with the Current roster emerging victorious. On Sunday, after bracket play, the alums emerged victorious against the split squads in the semis vs Spank Y, and the finals over Spank X. The reps were valuable for the team; despite the short sides and increasingly windy conditions (30+ mph at times) the Spank teams went otherwise undefeated against Westchester, Delaware, Lovetap, and Lovetap Alum.
Lobster Pot
After a couple weeks of 'doing work' the gang loaded up for the long drive to the Lobster Pot Tourney in South Portland Maine. The day started off against Boston College, a team that missed last year's college season due to unforeseen circumstances. While certainly athletic, and showing some skills, the Eagles couldn't convert cleanly and PSU rolled to a 12-5 victory. Our O-line went 5/5 w/ two turns, and while we were happy with our break conversion rate, (63%), we were a little generous with the disc, gifting BC w/ a few turns from our defensive lines, and vowed to ramp it up over the day.
In our next game, versus Buffalo, the outcome was similar (13-5). The breezy conditions affected play somewhat, but we improved our transition decisions and played a slightly cleaner game. However, going into our next game, vs. a Northeastern team that missed nationals by 1 goal last season in a deep North East region.
Fall is fall, and we know they are missing several players, but we played a game. We benefited from a couple of miscues, but also played some of the cleanest frisbee the team has played in recent memory. The offense went 5/6 with only 2 turns; and the defense played a clinical game, going 7/11 (64%) for breaks, completing 92% of their passes. 5 of those defensive goals were scored without a turn, highlighting the hard work the team has put in this year to develop their individual skills, as well as the increased level of focus at practice that has raised the collective play of the team.
Unfortunately due to rain, the second day of the tournament was cancelled. Overall we were happy with the level of play. We ran even defensive lines throughout the day, getting valuable reps for all players, and everyone contributed.
On November 5-6 we will wrap up the fall campaign at the Steel City Showdown in Pittsburgh (ish), PA facing off against Pitt, OSU, CMU, CWRU, Cornell, Notre Dame and others.
